The Prime Minister and First Ministers met with prominent Indigenous Australians for a historic meeting on the future of Closing the Gap. This is one of several significant events which happened in Canberra this week in the lead up to the 10th Closing the Gap report.

On Wednesday 7 February, around 80 prominent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people gathered to discuss the future of Closing the Gap. This marks the next step in the Closing the Gap journey—one where government works in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

On Thursday, the Special Gathering met with the Prime Minister and First Ministers to share their views on the future of Closing the Gap. The Gathering culminated with a final statement setting out the priorities of the refresh of the Closing the Gap agenda.

Today, representatives from the Special Gathering met with the Council of Australian Governments (COAG). The Gathering representatives presented their Statement to COAG on the refreshed Closing the Gap agenda. This was the first COAG meeting for 2018, making Indigenous Affairs the first COAG agenda item of the year.
