The National Strategic Framework for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ Mental Health and Social and Emotional Wellbeing 2017-2023

Social and emotional wellbeing is the foundation for physical and mental health for First Australians.

The Australian Government is committed to improving both social and emotional wellbeing and mental health outcomes for First Australians and today released the renewed ‘National Strategic Framework for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ Mental Health and Social and Emotional Wellbeing 2017-2023’.

The renewed framework sets out a comprehensive and culturally appropriate guide for action by Indigenous specific and mainstream health services.

Developed by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Advisory Group in conjunction with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, experts and stakeholders, it provides a dedicated focus on social and emotional wellbeing and mental health.

Action areas and outcomes Action area 1: Strengthen the foundations Action area 2: Promote wellness Action area 3: Build capacity and resilience in people and groups at risk Action area 4: Provide care for people who are mildly or moderately ill Action area 5: Care for people living with a severe mental illness

While social and emotional wellbeing and mental health are distinct, they do interrelate. This framework recognises the importance of connection to spirituality, culture and community for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to lead successful and fulfilling lives.

The framework will help shape our approach for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and serve as a valuable resource for health professionals and service providers.
