The recent Indigenous Business Trade Fair in Darwin showcased innovative Indigenous owned companies and the Australian Government’s Indigenous Procurement Policy (IPP).

The IPP is increasing the rate of Australian Government contracting with Indigenous businesses in the NT and across the country.  Since the IPP launched in July 2015, 206 NT based Indigenous-owned businesses have won over $116 million in contracts.

To increase connections between Indigenous businesses and Commonwealth officers the Australian Government has funded Supply Nation to run a series of Indigenous Business Trade Fairs across the country.

With over 150 private and public sector representatives attending the Darwin event, NT Indigenous business owners were eager to build stronger connections and learn more about potential contract opportunities.

The IPP is also encouraging the private sector to increase their involvement with Indigenous companies and job seekers. In just twelve months, Indigenous supplier use and employment targets have been included in over $1.6 billion in contracts.

Carita Davis, the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet’s Top End and Tiwi Islands Regional Manager, spoke at the Trade Fair about the effect the IPP has had on local Indigenous businesses and the wider community.

“For major suppliers to all levels of government, having Indigenous participation in their workforce and supply chain is now an important part of doing business with government,” Carita said.

“I urge all businesses to examine their recruitment and purchasing practices and consider ways to further connect with Indigenous businesses and Indigenous job seekers.”
