The Office for Women is pleased to invite all interested parties and individuals to attend the first in our new series of web conferences, commencing on Wednesday 7 November 2018 from 11.30 to 13.00 (AEDT).

The purpose of this new initiative is to utilise web technology to create more accessible avenues of communication between the government, civil society groups and individuals who are interested in the work of the Office for Women. An integral part of delivering on our priorities is hearing from the people we strive to serve, from all corners of our vast country.

Each interactive seminar will take place in a virtual meeting space and begin with a presentation by Office for Women on the thematic issue for the session, informing participants about current policy, possible future directions, upcoming initiatives, and/or relevant research. Throughout the presentation participants can pose questions or make observations, and interact with other participants and the moderator through a ‘chat’ that runs parallel with the session.

In addition to specific areas of discussion and focus, this conference series also provides an opportunity to jointly review the outcomes from Australia’s recent appearance before the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women, as well as review the recommendations made by the Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences. (See attached summary document for these recommendations.)

The first conference of this exciting new series will be on the topic of gender-based violence. Ensuring women and their children are safe from violence is one of the key priorities of the Australian Government. We are currently supporting implementation of the Third Action Plan under the National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children 2010-2022, as well as working hard with our government and civil society stakeholders to develop the Fourth Action Plan.

This first session on gender-based violence will examine current government policies and future directions, as well as consider the recent concluding observations of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women in relation to gender-based violence and the recommendations of the Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences. We are keen to hear your views on the government’s policies, now and into the future, to address gender-based violence.

Questions

We are interested in receiving your questions in advance of the conference. This will give us an opportunity to ensure that we are responding to your questions in our presentations. There will be a limited amount of time during the conference to ask further questions by typing them in the chat screen. However, this is your opportunity to give some thought to the issues you would like to see covered.

Taking into account the recommendations made by the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women in relation to gender-based violence and the recommendations of the Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences (attached):

  1. What, in your opinion, should be the government’s top three priorities to address gender-based violence?
  2. What initiatives, policies or programmes do you think the government should introduce or change in order to meet the key priorities you have identified in question 1?
  3. What questions would you like to ask Office for Women in relation to the federal Government’s priorities, implementation, policies and programmes on gender-based violence?
