Budget 2018-19: Budget announcements for the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet

On Tuesday 8 May, the Treasurer, the Hon Scott Morrison MP delivered the Government’s 2018-19 Federal Budget.

The Budget included significant measures for the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet:

  • Implementation of a simpler and more efficient data sharing and release framework through the creation of a National Data Commissioner in the PM&C portfolio. This whole-of-government initiative aims to maximise the economic and social benefits of using public-sector data, while also maintaining privacy and security safeguards.
  • Reforms to the Community Development Programme to increase employment in remote Australia, improve skills and employability of job seekers, and boost their community participation.
  • A review of the Australian Public Service to ensure it is well placed to serve Australian Governments and the Australian people into the future.
  • The establishment of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Land and Sea Future Fund in the Finance portfolio from 1 July 2018. This will involve the transfer of the $2 billion Land Account from PM&C to improve financial returns to support Indigenous people.

The Department received $23.3 million over two years to enhance our support for the Government's domestic and international policy agendas and to strengthen the Indigenous Affairs Regional Network presence.

These measures sit alongside the previously announced transfer of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) and the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) into the portfolio.
