Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet

Dr Martin Parkinson AC PSM, signs the White Ribbon pledge board that will be available for staff to sign in the lead up to White Ribbon Day.

In the lead up to White Ribbon Day on 25 November, PM&C staff can take the White Ribbon Oath, I will stand up, speak out and act to prevent men’s violence against women, and pledge their commitment by signing the pledge board.

First to sign the White Ribbon pledge board was Dr Martin Parkinson AC PSM. At an informal gathering of the Executive Board and other senior staff, Dr Parkinson reiterated his commitment to supporting victims and survivors of domestic and family violence who work at PM&C.

Following the event, Dr Parkinson was interviewed by The Canberra Times, discussing the Department’s strategies for responding to domestic and family violence. He acknowledged that the Public Service is no different to the rest of Australia, with domestic violence affecting staff across the APS.

"Around Australia, two thirds of women who have experienced domestic violence are also women who work,” Dr Parkinson said.

“It is a moral and ethical issue, but it is also a workplace issue and as the head of the public service I am absolutely committed to taking this seriously and doing our bit.”
