The third annual Status of Women Report Card (the report card) was released on Saturday 8 March 2025 for International Women’s Day.
The report card supports Working for Women: A Strategy for Gender Equality, which outlines the Australian Government's 10-year plan towards achieving gender equality.
It includes the most recent data and analysis on the social and economic equality issues facing women and girls in Australia.
It highlights areas where progress is being made, including:
- Australians’ understanding of violence against women has improved since 2013
- The gender pay gap has reduced from a record-high of 18.6% a decade ago to 11.9%
- Women hold 54.4% of Australian Government board positions, up from 39.1% in 2015.
It also shines a light on areas where progress has slowed or stalled, including:
- 37 women were killed by a current or former intimate partner in 2024 (as per Australian Institute of Criminology data)
- One in 4 women aged 45-64 years report that symptoms attributed to menopause make it hard to do daily activities
- In the private sector, the CEO and head of business gender pay gap is 27.1%.
The report card is an important tool to track and measure progress of Working for Women. Each year, the report card highlights key outcomes and indicators, identifying areas where more effort is needed to improve outcomes for women.
