Appointment of Official Secretary to the Governor-General

Statement from the Secretary

The Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC CVO DSC (Retd), today announced the appointment of Mr Gerard Martin PSM as Official Secretary to the Governor‑General.

Mr Martin will act in the role of Official Secretary from 1 July 2024, and his substantive five year term will commence on 4 August 2024.

Mr Martin has over 25 years’ of experience in the Australian Public Service, including in senior roles at the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C). Mr Martin was awarded the Public Service Medal in 2023 for outstanding public service in delivering advice and support to the Prime Minister and his Office, and to PM&C. 

On behalf of PM&C, I congratulate Mr Martin on his appointment and look forward to working with him in his new role.

I also wish to extend my thanks to Mr Paul Singer MVO for his considerable service to the Office of the Governor General, particularly as Official Secretary to the Governor-General the Honourable David Hurley AC CVO DSC (Retd). I wish Mr Singer the very best for the future.
