In accordance with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation Act 1983, the Secretary of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Professor Glyn Davis AC, has appointed Ms Daryl Karp AM to the Nomination Panel for appointments to the Board of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS). The appointment of Ms Karp follows the resignation of Dr Kirstin Ferguson AM on 6 February 2023.
Ms Karp has held executive roles in broadcast media, independent production houses and the public sector. Ms Karp’s previous roles include Non-Executive Director for the SBS and Head of Factual Programs (Television) at the ABC. Ms Karp has also served as CEO and Managing Director of Film Australia, as well as Director of the Museum of Australian Democracy (MoAD) at Old Parliament House. Ms Karp is currently the Director and CEO of the Australian National Maritime Museum.
Professor Davis has also reappointed Ms Helen Williams AC as Chair of the Panel until 28 June 2025. Ms Williams has served as Chair since August 2022 and as a Member of the Panel since 30 June 2017.
The Nomination Panel was established to:
- Conduct a selection process for non-executive Members and Chairpersons for the ABC and SBS Boards based on the principle of merit and having regard to the selection criteria provided by the Minister for Communications; and
- Provide the Minister for Communications (and in the case of the Chair of the ABC, the Prime Minister) with a written shortlist of at least three recommended candidates for each vacancy with a comparative assessment of the recommended candidates.
The Nomination Panel carries out its functions assisted by the Secretariat within the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts.
