Statement from the Secretary

The Prime Minister and the Minister for the Public Service today announced the Albanese Government will recommend the Governor General appoint Dr Gordon de Brouwer PSM as the next Australian Public Service (APS) Commissioner. This follows a merit-based selection process chaired by Ms Katherine Jones PSM, Secretary of the Attorney-General’s Department.

His five year term will commence on 11 May 2023 immediately following the retirement of Mr Peter Woolcott AO on 10 May 2023.

Dr de Brouwer has led the APS Reform agenda with skill and commitment as Secretary for Public Sector Reform since June 2022. He has been supported by the APS Reform Office in PM&C, reporting to the Minister for the Public Service.

Dr de Brouwer’s appointment as APS Commissioner recognises his decades of experience in public sector policy and administration as a Secretary and in other senior roles across the APS, as well as in academia.

As APS Commissioner, Dr de Brouwer will continue to lead public sector reform including to build a stronger APS that embodies integrity and stewardship, puts people at the centre of policy and services, acts as a model employer and has the capability to deliver outcomes for the Australian community now and into the future.

I look forward to working with Dr de Brouwer in his new role.
