Australia's path to a sustainable future has reached a major milestone with the official commencement of the Net Zero Economy Authority (the Authority) on 11 December 2024. This pivotal development follows the successful passage and royal assent of its legislation, and proclamation by the Governor-General.

Coinciding with this milestone, the Australian Government has announced the Authority’s inaugural Board members.

The appointed members are Chair Dr Iain Ross AO, Mr Tony Maher, Mr Mike Mrdak AO, Ms Michele O'Neil, Professor Robynne Quiggin, Ms Anna Skarbek, and Ms Zoe Whitton.

The Authority is central to the Government’s vision for a Future Made in Australia, and ensuring the regions that power the nation will do so for decades to come.

Board members were selected based on their deep collective experience across regional development, the trade union movement, business, industry, Indigenous advocacy and climate policy.

The board determines the Authority’s strategy and objectives, and is responsible for its effective and efficient performance, while working closely with the Chief Executive Officer, David Shankey.

The Authority works with communities, state, territory and local governments, regional bodies, unions, industry, investors and First Nations groups to take advantage of the opportunities presented by global decarbonisation.

‘The Net Zero Economy Authority is key to unlocking our potential as a renewable energy superpower, and ensuring Australia’s regions and workers realise the benefits of the emerging global net zero economy,’ said Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
