Today, the Minister for the Public Service Senator the Hon Katy Gallagher announced Australian Public Service Commissioner Mr Peter Woolcott AO will retire on 10 May 2023.
Since his appointment in August 2018, Mr Woolcott has stewarded the APS through a period of significant change requiring quick adaptation to a changing world. Under his leadership, the APS Academy was established, providing a valued learning and development hub for staff and building capability across the APS. He also promoted and contributed to ‘One APS’, which ensures collaboration across departments and agencies.
One of the biggest challenges we’ve all faced over the past few years is of course the COVID-19 pandemic. Mr Woolcott’s leadership throughout this difficult time assisted the APS to respond to the unprecedented challenges faced by our nation. These are just some of the many legacies Mr Woolcott will leave behind as APS Commissioner.
I have valued Mr Woolcott’s advice and support during his tenure. His contributions and deep commitment to the stewardship of the APS has been instrumental, including as we implement the Government’s APS Reform agenda.
Of course, Mr Woolcott’s contribution to the APS has been broader than his role as APS Commissioner. He had a long and distinguished career at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, serving in various senior roles, including as Australian High Commissioner to New Zealand, Australian Ambassador for the Environment and Australian Ambassador to Italy. He was appointed as an Officer in the Order of Australia in 2017 for his outstanding work in international relations.
I would like to thank Mr Woolcott for his significant service to the APS and I wish him all the best in retirement.
