Prime Minister Anthony Albanese attended the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Lima on 15-16 November, and the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro on 18-19 November. Both APEC and the G20 play a critical role in steering the regional and global economies.
At these summits, the Prime Minister worked closely with international partners to promote sustainable and inclusive economic growth, and to make progress on global challenges. This was Prime Minister Albanese's first visit to South America as Prime Minister, and his third APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting and G20 Leaders’ Summit.
APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting – Lima, Peru
Leaders came together at APEC 2024 under the theme ‘Empower, Include, Grow’ to discuss trade and investment for inclusive and interconnected growth; innovation and digitalisation; and sustainable growth for resilient development.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Albanese called for further regional economic cooperation and progress on digital trade, to make trade faster, easier and cheaper for businesses and consumers. Leaders also discussed the transition to net zero, with Prime Minister Albanese sharing Australia’s ambition to become a renewable energy superpower and highlighting the economic and job opportunities this will present.
APEC Leaders adopted the 2024 APEC Leaders' Machu Picchu Declaration, which sets out APEC’s work in trade facilitation, services trade, digital trade, agricultural sustainability, and gender equality and inclusion.
In the sidelines of the APEC Leaders' Summit, the Prime Minister met with the President of Peru, Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra, the President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, and the Prime Minister of Singapore, Lawrence Wong.
G20 Leaders’ Summit - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The G20 Rio de Janeiro Leaders’ Summit was guided by the theme ‘Building a Just World and Sustainable Planet’ and focused on three key priorities: (i) social inclusion and the fight against hunger and poverty; (ii) sustainable development, energy transitions and climate action; and (iii) the reform of global governance institutions.
Prime Minister Albanese spoke about the need to keep on top of global inflation and to address its impact on people, and discussed the need for climate action and the economic opportunities of the net zero transition.
Australia joined the G20’s Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, and will support other Alliance members by sharing our expertise as a major food producer and exporter in contributing to food security and poverty alleviation in our region.

In the sidelines of the G20 Summit, the Prime Minister held separate meetings with the President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Sir Keir Starmer, the President of Türkiye, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. He also met the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi for the 2nd India-Australia Annual Summit. The Prime Minister also met with leaders from Mexico, Indonesia, Korea and Turkey as part of the MIKTA grouping - and held a range of engagements with other G20 leaders to discuss bilateral priorities and advance Australia’s interests.
