The Queen's Platinum Jubilee - Iconic Australian buildings illuminated in royal purple

This year marks the 70th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s accession to the throne.

To acknowledge this historic occasion on 6 February 1952, iconic Australian buildings were illuminated in royal purple on Sunday 6 February 2022.

Many events will be held this year in the United Kingdom and across the Commonwealth.

In Australia, events and activities to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee will be announced in the months to come.

Australia’s relationship with The Queen continues to be one of respect and affection. Each time she visited our shores, she brought goodwill, good cheer and encouragement. Her Majesty has been a source of strength and solace to many.

The Queen first visited Australia in 1954 and in total has visited us 16 times. On that first visit she was greeted in Sydney Harbour by a million people. Another 6 million Australians gathered to see her at various locations across the nation.

Most of us have known no other sovereign; she has reigned for more than half our history as a federated nation. Fifteen prime ministers have served during her reign.

Australians continue to admire her grace and dignity, unflagging for 70 years.

The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet published details of the Royal Visits to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in 2022. More information about Australia's Platinum Jubilee celebrations is available from the Trove archive of the The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee 2022 website
