Minister for Women, Senator the Hon Katy Gallagher, has released the second Status of Women Report card, and the first in support of Working for Women: A Strategy for Gender Equality released on Thursday 7 March 2024.
Released annually on International Women’s Day, the Report Card includes the most recent available data on the social and economic equality issues facing women and girls in Australia.
The most recent available data shows where women are making gains, including:
- The 2024 Australia Day Honours list with 50.5% of Order of Australia awards were women.
- The Gender Pay Gap has reduced from 13.3 in November 2022 to 12 per cent in November 2023 – the lowest level on record
- Australia’s international ranking for gender equality has improved from 43rd in 2023 to 26th in 2024
It also highlights the barriers to social and economic equality faced by women and girls in Australia, including:
- Mothers who change from partnered to single mother households experience a 20% decline in household income.
- Only 9% of CEOs in the ASX300 are women.
- One in five women and one in 16 men have experienced sexual violence since the age of 15.
- Over half of women experiencing menopause symptoms reported negative impacts on their mental and emotional wellbeing.
The Report Card is an important tool to track and measure progress of Working for Women. Each year, the Report Card will highlight key outcomes and indicators, identifying areas where more data and effort is required to improve outcomes for women.
