Visit to Australia by the Prime Minister of Timor-Leste

This week, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese welcomed the Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, His Excellency General Taur Matan Ruak, to Australia as a Guest of Government from 7 to 9 February.

In Canberra, the prime ministers reaffirmed both countries' steadfast support for the Australia–Timor-Leste partnership, including through defence and economic cooperation, labour mobility and new areas such as critical infrastructure.

During his visit, Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak paid homage to peacekeepers at the Australian War Memorial and had the opportunity to observe the workings of Australia's democracy firsthand during a Question Time with Prime Minister Albanese at Parliament House – a significant and memorable occasion for both nations.

While in Canberra, Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak also met with the Governor-General, His Excellency General the Hon David Hurley AC DSC (Retd), at Government House, and the Attorney-General, the Hon Mark Dreyfus KC MP, at Parliament House. 

Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak’s broader visit to Australia included a stop in Darwin where he witnessed the signing of a new Timor-Leste – Northern Territory Strategic Partnership Agreement.
