Today Prime Minister Anthony Albanese welcomed the new Prime Minister of New Zealand, the Rt Hon Chris Hipkins, to Canberra. It is Prime Minister Hipkins' first international visit since being sworn in.

The prime ministers discussed people issues, climate change and working together in the Pacific.

Australia and New Zealand have a strong and enduring relationship defined by respect, trust and genuine bonds between our people. This year is a milestone year for the trans-Tasman relationship. Our countries will celebrate:

  • 40 years of our Closer Economic Relations Trade Agreement which made tariff-free trade easier across the Tasman
  • 50 years of the Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement, which allows Australians and New Zealanders to freely visit, live and work between the two countries
  • 80 years of reciprocal diplomatic representation following the establishment of our high commissions.

The prime ministers will work closely and ensure that our countries' relationship continues to grow and adapt to the challenges of the future.
