The Albanese Government has appointed Dr Iain Ross AO, as acting Chair of the Net Zero Economy Agency (the Agency) with a view to appointing him to Chair of the Net Zero Economy Authority (the Authority), pending the passing of legislation establishing the Authority through the Parliament.
Dr Ross, a retired jurist who served as a judge of the Federal Court of Australia and as President of the Australian Fair Work Commission, brings a breadth of experience and a strong commitment to fair and innovative practices. His legal and regulatory expertise will be invaluable as the nation navigates the complexities of Australia’s economic transformation.
"The appointment of Dr Iain Ross as Chair will benefit not only the organisation but also the broader Australian community," stated his predecessor, the Hon Greg Combet AM. "Iain's profound understanding of legal frameworks, combined with his commitment to justice and sustainability, makes him the ideal leader to steer the Authority through its next phase of development."
The Government’s appointment of Dr Ross will commence following the departure of Mr Combet on 31 May 2024.
“As I pass the baton to Dr Ross, I am confident that his broad experience and deep understanding of labour markets and economics will steer the Authority towards new heights. His leadership will undoubtedly catalyse the significant economic transformation Australia requires to achieve net zero emissions by 2050”.
In expressing his enthusiasm about his new role, Dr Ross emphasised the importance of an inclusive and balanced approach to achieving net zero emissions.
"I am honoured to lead the Agency at this critical juncture," said Dr Ross. "My vision is to ensure that our journey to a net zero future is not only effective but also equitable. We must support our industries and communities while embracing innovative solutions that promote long-term economic and environmental health”.
Dr Ross's extensive career includes significant roles such as the President of the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal and a Commissioner of the Victorian Law Reform Commission. His leadership positions have consistently reflected his dedication to upholding fairness and adapting systems to meet evolving needs.
Reflecting on his new appointment, Dr Ross shared, "Building on the solid foundation laid by Greg Combet, my focus will be on enhancing our strategic initiatives that align with our environmental goals. It's imperative that we engage all stakeholders and harness the potential of emerging technologies to facilitate a smooth transition to a net zero economy”.
Dr Ross as Chair of the Authority will be supported by an independent Board. Board members will be appointed following the passage of legislation through the Parliament having regard to their significant skills and experience. An open, competitive selection process for the NZEA CEO will soon commence.
As he steps into his role, Dr Ross is committed to leveraging his profound expertise and leadership experience to champion the Agency’s objectives. His background as an Officer of the Order of Australia and a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia underscores his broad recognition and respect in the field.
