National Redress Scheme

The National Redress Scheme supports those people who have experienced institutional child sexual abuse.

The National Redress Scheme provides acknowledgement and support to people who have experienced institutional child sexual abuse.

The Scheme:

  • acknowledges that many children were sexually abused in Australian institutions
  • holds institutions accountable for this abuse
  • helps people who have experienced institutional child sexual abuse gain access to counselling, a direct personal response, and a Redress payment.

The Scheme started on 1 July 2018 and will run for 10 years.

Almost 600 institutions across Australia have signed up to the Scheme. The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet is participating in the Scheme, so people can access redress where they were abused at institutions that were run by the Commonwealth.
