General recruitment process

This information should give you a good idea of what to expect between submitting your application and the point at which the hiring manager is able to make an offer.

Recruitment timelines

PM&C recruitment typically takes 8 to 10 weeks from the date applications close to the time hiring managers make job offers. This timeframe may vary depending on the complexity of the role, the number of applicants, and internal approvals. If you have questions about your next steps, including questions about PM&C's assessment processes, contact the contact officer listed on the job ad.

How we make recruitment decisions

In line with the Australian Public Service Employment Principles in section 10A of the Public Service Act 1999, the APS makes decisions relating to engagement and promotion based on merit.

This means:

  • all eligible members of the community are given a reasonable opportunity to apply
  • an assessment is made of the relative suitability of candidates, using a competitive selection process
  • the assessment is based on the relationship between the candidates' work-related qualities and the qualities genuinely required to perform the relevant duties
  • the assessment focuses on the relative capacity of candidates to achieve outcomes related to the relevant duties.

How we assess your application

Initial shortlisting

We will assess your application on your potential to perform the role. You will normally demonstrate this through your resume and your written application or 'pitch'. A recruitment panel will use the criteria in the 'why you're the ideal candidate' section from the candidate pack (for the relevant classification level) as the basis to assess your application or 'pitch'. If your application is shortlisted, you will progress to the next phase.

Further assessment

The APS selects people for jobs based on merit. This means we look for evidence of your skills, abilities and experience and how well you fit the job requirements, compared with other applicants in the community. This ensures we select the best applicant for the job.

We may use a variety of techniques to assess candidates in addition to the initial application (your resume and written application or 'pitch'). These may include one or more of the following to give everyone the best chance to shine:

  • phone, face-to-face and video interviews
  • work sample tests (scenarios based on tasks that you may perform in the role)
  • referee checks.

For bulk recruitment rounds such as the PM&C Graduate Program, we may also use psychometric testing (testing your personality, motivation and cognitive abilities) and group assessment centres.
