On Tuesday 2 April, the Treasurer, the Hon Josh Frydenberg MP, delivered the 2019-20 Federal Budget.

The Budget delivered a number of important measures for the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, including:

  • Establishment of the North Queensland Livestock Industry Agency (NQLIRA), which will support the immediate response, recovery and reconstruction efforts in support of North, Far North and Western Queensland communities affected by heavy rainfall and wide-spread flooding in early 2019.
  • Development of strategies to prevent financial abuse and improve women’s economic independence.
  • Undertake a co-design process with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to articulate the options for a Voice to Parliament.
  • Provide additional support to Indigenous students to complete their secondary studies and close the gap in educational outcomes between indigenous and non-indigenous students.
  • Contribute towards the Barkly Regional Deal, which will include the delivery of a suite of short, medium and long-term initiatives to support economic and social development in the region.
  • Bolster resourcing to the National Office for Child Safety to respond to recommendations of the Royal Commission into Institutional Child Sexual Abuse and to provide national policies and strategies to enhance children’s safety and wellbeing.
  • Development of the future strategy for the Commonwealth's role in supporting and growing the Social Impact Investment market.
  • Implement youth led Indigenous suicide prevention initiatives that take a regionally specific and tailored approach to each community.
  • Undertake preparatory work on a National Museum and Memorial for Victims and Survivors of Institutional Child Sexual Abuse, including consultation with stakeholders, victims and survivors to ensure their stories are recorded.
  • The finalisation of an agreement between the Commonwealth and the South Australian Government to support better housing for residents of remote Indigenous communities.
  • Contribute to the Whole of Government package to secure tourism and jobs in Kakadu National Park and support the future of the Jabiru Township.
