The Australian Government is committed to addressing climate change, ensuring affordable and reliable energy for all Australians and driving economic growth while protecting and restoring our environment.
The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C) works with the following agencies to deliver policies across these areas:
- Department of Industry, Science and Resources
- Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW)
- Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry
- Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
- other agencies and scientific institutions.
PM&C works closely with the DCCEEW to support Australian progress toward net zero emissions by 2050. PM&C assists in the development and coordination of the Government’s domestic and international climate change initiatives. These include reducing emissions in the industrial, transport, land and agricultural sectors, and meeting Australia’s commitments as a party to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
PM&C also assists in the development and implementation of the Government’s energy policy agenda. This ensures reliable and affordable energy as Australia transitions to a low carbon economy and boosting the development of new clean energy industries, such as green hydrogen production and export. This includes advising on major policy initiatives such as:
- modernising the electricity grid
- making electric vehicles more accessible
- supporting the growth and uptake of renewable energy and new low emission technologies.
The Government is taking steps now to ensure Australia is adapting to the changing climate. PM&C works across government and in particular with the DCCEEW to assist in safeguarding Australia’s communities, infrastructure and economy against future environmental conditions and events.
The Government has committed to a suite of environmental and water policies to protect and restore Australia’s unique biodiversity and ecosystems and our water resources. PM&C supports the Government’s environmental and water policies domestically and internationally. These include:
- environmental law reform
- biodiversity conservation
- waste and recycling
- national water reform
- implementation of the Murray-Darling Basin Plan.
