The Office for Women is in the midst of preparations for the 64th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW64), to be held at the UN Headquarters in New York from 9 to 20 March 2020.
In 2020, the international community will mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, and the fifth anniversary of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
In this anniversary year, CSW 64 will focus on the review and appraisal of the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. The review will look at current challenges affecting implementation of the Platform for Action, the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of women, and will assess its contribution towards realising the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
A range of side events are held at CSW each year to shine a spotlight on key issues facing gender equality or showcase innovative approaches to breaking down barriers for women and girls. Australia has traditionally sought Expressions of Interest (EOI) from individuals and representatives of non-government actors to co-host side events with the Australian Government.
The UN has advised that, due to austerity measures, it is unlikely to make any UN rooms available for side events. The Office for Women is therefore unlikely to run an EOI for formal Australian Government side events for CSW64.
We anticipate there will still be a wide range of side events for CSW64 at other locations. Interested individuals and organisations might like to consider hosting side events at venues near the UN headquarters.
Further information on side events at CSW64 can be found on the UN website.
