About the Quad

The Quad's origins date back to our first collaboration in December 2004 in response to the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami.

Today, Quad partners are working together on the Indo-Pacific’s most pressing challenges and priorities, including cooperation on climate, critical and emerging technology, cyber security, infrastructure, regional health security, space, maritime security, counter-terrorism, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. The Quad complements other bilateral, regional and multilateral cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, including with ASEAN and Pacific partners.

Quad Leaders first met as a group in March 2021 when they held a virtual Quad Leaders’ Summit. In September 2021, the United States hosted the first in-person Quad Leaders’ Summit in Washington, D.C. Since then, Quad Leaders have met annually.
