Closing the gap refresh. Share your views.

It has been 10 years since the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) first committed to Closing the Gap.

There is a shared view among governments, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and the wider community that we need to do better.

We need to lift our sights beyond addressing inequalities and ask what Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples value for themselves, their families and their communities.

In December 2016, COAG committed to work together, and with Indigenous leaders, organisations and communities to refresh the Closing the Gap agenda, with a renewed emphasis on collaborative effort, evaluation, and building on what works.

The Closing the Gap Refresh will broaden the focus of the initiative and ask First Australians what needs to be done to promote a thriving and prosperous life for Indigenous Australians, beyond existing targets.

Community consultations have begun to hear directly from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations and leaders on how we should develop policy and measure success over the coming decade.

This will be complemented by additional conversations with national peak bodies, state and territory led engagements and an online consultation open to all Australians.

The Refresh website provides an opportunity for all Australians to share their views on the future of Closing the Gap.

It is a chance to reconsider the national vision for the future of Indigenous affairs in Australia.

To succeed, all Australians must work together. For more information and to get involved visit closingthegaprefresh.pmc.gov.au
